New and Revised Supporting Documents for Animal Ethics and Care Programs
The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has revised its CCAC policy: Certification of animal ethics and care programs, and has developed supporting frequently asked questions. Published in 2016, this policy has been revised to include the following:
- the initial CCAC Probationary Certificate of GAP – Good Animal Practice® has been replaced with the CCAC Preliminary Certificate of GAP – Good Animal Practice®, and its validity has been increased from 12 to 18 months;
- major animal welfare incidents must now be reported to the CCAC within 10 days of occurrence (consequences for failure to notify the CCAC are outlined in the policy);
- the CCAC’s reporting requirements to the granting agencies have changed; and
- the definition of “in good standing” has been modified to include a valid Acknowledgement and Consent Form.
The CCAC has also developed a Major Animal Welfare Incident Self-Reporting Form, to help institutions report these incidents. In addition, the CCAC has updated its Scientific Merit Peer Review Form, which provides a template for institutions conducting institutional scientific merit review.
