New and Revised Supporting Documents for Animal Ethics and Care Programs
The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has replaced its CCAC Assessment Panel Policy (1999) with a new document entitled Guidance for CCAC Assessment Panels, which focuses on the process of assessing institutions and the role of assessment panels.
The CCAC has also released the following new or revised documents:
- the CCAC Expedited Pedagogical Merit Review for Animal-based Teaching and Training Activities: Sample Form for use by CCAC-certified institutions that follow an expedited pedagogical merit review process for competency-based training activities where the intended learning outcomes are either mandated by a third party (e.g., a ministry of education, or an accreditation or certification body), or are an essential component of researcher or personnel training programs;
- updated CCAC frequently asked questions: Pedagogical merit of live animal-based teaching and training (specifically question 8, which has been revised for clarity and to include the expedited pedagogical merit review sample form); and
- the Shared Animals Ethics and Care Program document, which describes the structure and characteristics of animal ethics and care programs in institutions with shared programs, and explains the similarities and differences between integrated and partnered programs. This document is especially relevant for new animal ethics and care programs that would like to contract services from a certified institution.
All CCAC policies can be found on the Policies page of the CCAC website, under the section Certification — About Certification. Other related documents can be found on the Resources page.
Thank you for your ongoing collaboration in ensuring high standards of animal ethics and care at your institution.
