Impact of COVID-19 on Animals Used in Canadian Science

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted animals used in research, teaching, and testing across Canada at varying levels. The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has created a report which provides a national overview of the effects on animals used in CCAC-certified institutions between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021.

Since March 2020, the CCAC required all certified institutions to complete a COVID-19 Animal Numbers Tracking Form, regardless of whether their animal numbers were impacted by COVID-19 or not. This information has provided a more complete picture of the consequences of the pandemic on ethical animal care and use programs, has helped ensure accountability to the Canadian public, and will inform the development of future policies and improve preparedness.

The CCAC would like to thank certified institutions for their dedication to ethical animal care throughout the pandemic, and for ensuring that proper crisis management protocols were in place and followed.
