CCAC Statement on Animal Use in Science in Ontario

Over the past several months, the use of dogs and cats in science has received significant public and media attention. The Canadian Council on Animal Care’s (CCAC) top priority is the care and wellness of those animals.

Since then, the CCAC has participated in dozens of interviews, providing clarity on the oversight system that governs the ethical care and use of animals in Canadian science, and emphasizing the importance of institutional transparency.

The CCAC’s mandate is to ensure that animals are used in science only when necessary, and that all animals involved receive the highest standard of care, guided by scientific evidence and expert advice. As Canada’s national oversight system for the care and use of animals in science, the CCAC provides the framework and standards that support institutions in upholding strong animal welfare, ensuring animals are treated with compassion, respect, and care.

The CCAC is committed to ensuring animal welfare remains a top priority. The CCAC works with CCAC-certified institutions, including academic and research institutions, private organizations, and government departments, to ensure they consistently meet Canada’s rigorous standards for the care and use of animals in research, teaching, and testing, and demonstrate a shared dedication to ethical and responsible science.
