The CCAC Publishes Outcomes for Animals Guidelines

The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has published the CCAC guidelines: Outcomes for animals at the end of scientific activities, along with an accompanying frequently asked questions and the essentials document on outcomes for animals, which is part of a new series of documents to introduce our recently published guidelines. The guidelines have a one-year implementation timeline.

These new guidelines are based on the recently published CCAC Ethics Principles for Animal Use in Science, particularly Principles of Application 10 and 11, which affirm that animals should be given the opportunity for life beyond scientific use, and that killing an animal, even using a humane method, constitutes a harm. Accordingly, decisions at the conclusion of a scientific activity must be guided by respect for animals and an assessment of their welfare, with all reasonable alternatives carefully considered and ruled out before termination of life is contemplated.

The CCAC would like to thank those who participated in the review of these documents. Your insights and expertise are deeply valued, and we truly appreciate the important role you play in the development of our standards for the ethical care and use of animals in Canadian science.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to .
