Animal Use Data

Revised Animal Use Data Collection for 2030

The CCAC is pleased to announce the launch of the revised Animal Use Data reporting system, taking effect in January 2030, with the first updated national animal use data report published in 2031.

Between now and December 31, 2029, institutions must continue to categorize their protocols and submit their annual animal use data to the CCAC using the CCAC’s current categories of invasiveness for animal experiments and NOT the new categories of welfare impact.

This milestone represents years of collaboration and hundreds of hours of work by two dedicated working groups, and broad input from stakeholders from various CCAC committees and institutions across Canada. The result is a balanced, uniquely Canadian approach that captures additional valuable information most institutions already collect but do not currently report to the CCAC, that will deliver a clearer national picture of animal welfare outcomes and scientific activities. The new system will streamline reporting processes for institutions, provide deeper insights for the CCAC, and strengthen public trust through greater accountability.

The CCAC recognizes that this change will require effort on the part of its certified institutions, from updating forms and processes to making software adjustments and dedicating staff resources. We are deeply grateful for the commitment and collaboration of all institutions in making this important advancement possible. Together, we are building a stronger, more transparent, and more ethical foundation for animal care and use in Canadian science.
