Thank You, CCAC Volunteers!

Happy National Volunteer Week!

Happy National Volunteer Week! On behalf of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), I would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteer experts for all of the time, expertise, and knowledge you have shared with us over the years.

National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration intended to spur an important conversation – why volunteers matter. The impact of volunteers at the CCAC cannot be overstated; everything we do, and all that we achieve, is thanks to volunteers. The CCAC relies on the support of countless volunteer experts, who serve on more than 190 local animal care committees, as well as its Board of Directors and numerous committees, subcommittees, and task forces.

In 2021-2022 alone:

  • 51 people worked on one of the CCAC’s five standing committees;
  • 147 volunteers participated in guidelines development subcommittees;
  • 43 people participated in working groups or task forces;
  • 65 were assessment panel members; and
  • 31 presenters spoke at our virtual national workshops.

These numbers are just a small sample of the people we collaborate with at CCAC-certified institutions across the country. Our volunteers contribute countless hours to improving the welfare of animals in science, including through the efforts of their organizations, by participating on animal care committees, or in reviewing drafts of our guidelines documents.

Together, we share the common goal of ensuring the ethical care and use of all animals in Canadian science. Your collaboration in diligently spreading this message and delivering our programs in institutions across Canada is tremendously appreciated. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a wealth of experience within our ranks of volunteers.

Once again, thank you for the immeasurably valuable work you do. We could not do it without you, nor would we want to.

Kindest regards,

Pierre Verreault
Executive Director, CCAC
