Ms. Karen Gourlay Receives 2025 Harry C. Rowsell Lifetime Achievement Award
The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) is pleased to present this year’s Harry C. Rowsell Lifetime Achievement Award to Ms. Karen Gourlay, Director of Animal Facilities at McMaster University, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to the Canadian laboratory animal science community. With a career spanning 43 years, Ms. Gourlay has been a tireless advocate for the ethical care and use of laboratory animals, leaving an indelible mark on the Canadian scientific community.

Ms. Gourlay’s leadership has been instrumental in advancing the Three Rs principles, developing certification programs for laboratory animal technicians, and elevating standards for continuing education and communication in the field. Her extensive work with the CCAC over the years has strengthened oversight and ethical practices across the field, ensuring the highest level of care for animals in science.
As she prepares for retirement, we celebrate Ms. Gourlay’s lasting impact not only on the welfare of laboratory animals but also on the professionals she has mentored and inspired throughout her career. The Harry C. Rowsell Lifetime Achievement Award was named for the CCAC’s founding executive director, who devoted his life to promoting the optimal care and use of animals in Canadian science. This award is therefore in recognition and celebration of individuals who have made a lifetime of exceptional contributions to the improvement of animal care and welfare practices in science and to promoting ethical standards of animal care and use.
