CCAC Updates Confidentiality Policy to Enhance Transparency
In anticipation of the implementation of Phase 2 of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC)’s ongoing transparency initiative, the CCAC policy: Confidentiality of assessment information has been revised. The policy now indicates, under section 2, what additional institutional information will be public on the CCAC website once Phase 2 comes into effect in September 2025.
Results of Phase 1
During Phase 1 of the initiative, the following amendments were made to the policy:
- non-identifiable aggregated data and the names of all CCAC-certified institutions will henceforth be published on the CCAC website
- the CCAC’s obligation to notify federal granting agencies when institutions are no longer certified was clarified
- individual names contained in assessment reports voluntarily published by institutions are to be redacted
The response to the initiative has been positive, with growing participation from certified institutions. The CCAC would like to thank institutions who are actively making strides towards increasing their transparency.
Phase 2
Beginning in September 2025, the CCAC will publish the following key details about each CCAC-certified institution:
- date of last assessment visit
- visit type (regular or interim)
- certificate category (regular, probationary, or preliminary)
Phase 3
Beginning in September 2028, the CCAC will implement the publication of the following information as the final stage of its initiative:
- annual aggregated data on recommendations made in assessment reports (major, serious, regular, and commendations)
- annual aggregated summary of frequent assessment recommendations
More information about the CCAC transparency initiative is available in the Transparency section of our website. As we approach Phase 2 this fall, we will release information to better inform the public about the assessment and certification process and to answer questions regarding this phase of the transparency initiative.
